When the Seljuks solidified their control, Sunni scholars and trade returned to the city, and churches and holy sites for the Christians, destroyed during the time of the Fatimids, were rebuilt. There was a period of time right before when the Christian Crusaders had entered Jerusalem that the Seljuks and Fatimids had fought over control of the city. During this time, Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus I called on his Western European brethren to save Jerusalem from the Muslims.
After this, Christian pilgrims and churches reportedly came under attack, garnering the attention of Pope Urban II. In 1095, he called for capturing the city from the âinfidels,â thereby triggering the First Crusade and the goal of establishing Catholic control of the Holy Land.[90] This came at a time when the Byzantine Empire, led by Alexius, was fighting a devastating war with the Seljuk Turks in the Anatolian Peninsula, located in modern day Turkey.
